The Sissala West District Assembly, through its Works Department and in collaboration with relevant planning and development authorities, is set to commence a major Development Control Exercise within the Gwollu Township and other bigger communities in the district beginning Thursday, 11th June 2026.

The exercise forms part of the Assembly’s broader efforts to promote orderly physical development, enforce planning regulations, and ensure compliance with Ghana’s building and spatial planning laws.

According to a public announcement issued by the District Works Department, the operation will focus on identifying and marking all unauthorized structures and developments, both permanent and temporary, that were constructed without valid Building or Development Permits from the Assembly.

The Assembly explained that the exercise is being carried out in line with the provisions of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), the Land Use and Spatial Planning Act, 2016 (Act 925), as well as the National Building Regulations 2022 L.I. 2465 and other relevant laws governing physical development in Ghana.

Authorities indicated that owners and occupiers of affected structures would subsequently be engaged and required to regularize their developments by obtaining the necessary approvals and permits from the Assembly.

The Sissala West District Assembly further urged all individuals who have undertaken physical developments without the requisite permit approvals to voluntarily report to the Works Department and Physical Planning Department to regularize their documents in order to avoid enforcement actions.

The Assembly cautioned that unauthorized developments could attract sanctions, penalties, demolition, or any other lawful measures as provided under the relevant planning regulations.

Residents and the general public have also been encouraged to cooperate fully with officials during the exercise to facilitate effective enforcement and promote proper spatial planning and sustainable development within the Gwollu Township.

The initiative is expected to strengthen development control measures within the district and help address the increasing concerns over unregulated construction activities and encroachment in the municipality.

By this exercise, the Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring planned growth, environmental safety, and compliance with development standards in the Sissala West District.
