The Chairman of the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) says Star Oil\u2019s decision to suspend its membership was not because it was pushed aside, but because it held a minority position on a key industry policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel Kumi, speaking on Joy News\u2019 PM Express, Business Edition on Thursday, said the Chamber followed its established decision-making process on the petroleum price floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cStar Oil is a very key member of the Chamber,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His comments follow Star Oil\u2019s announcement of an indefinite suspension from COMAC, citing dissatisfaction with the Association’s handling of the fuel price floor debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Kumi said Star Oil itself acknowledged the principle guiding COMAC\u2019s decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m happy in the letter that Star Oil wrote to us, it did admit that it respects the view of the majority,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stressed that minority views are recognised, but cannot override the collective agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe also respect the view of the minority, but at the end of the day, the majority decision carries the day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Kumi explained that the fuel price floor policy was initiated by the Chamber and not imposed from outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis floor pricing issue, the idea was pushed forward by the Chamber about two years ago with the National Petroleum Authority, and it was accepted,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He admitted the policy has faced difficulties. \u201cAlong the line, there have been challenges with the policy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said those challenges led to internal objections. \u201cAnd I think that is what got our member to express those things,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, those objections later resulted in Star Oil\u2019s decision to step aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUnfortunately, those expressions find their way in them, saying that they want to be suspended from the Chamber,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the development, Mr Kumi said COMAC respects Star Oil\u2019s choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe respect that decision of Star Oil,\u201d he said. But he said the Chamber\u2019s position remains firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt the end of the day, the majority decision is that, as it stands, the floor pricing policy is good for the industry,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the policy serves a protective role. \u201cIt protects the industry and is the way to go,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Kumi also rejected claims that larger companies dominate decisions at COMAC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt the Chamber level, at the board level, everybody has one vote,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stressed that size does not matter. \u201cNo matter how big you are, you still have one vote,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said policies only move forward with broad backing. \u201cIf it wasn\u2019t the majority decision, we couldn\u2019t push it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that unpopular proposals are dropped. \u201cThere are a lot of decisions that we have discussed, but if we find that it\u2019s not popular, we shelve it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the fuel price floor still commands support. \u201cThis one was a popular majority decision, and it\u2019s still the popular decision amongst the Chamber members,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
