Upper West Regional Peace Council Equip Sissala West Youth to Effectively Act as Community Based Peace Building Infrastructure

The Upper West Regional Peace Council in partnership with UNDP Atlantic corridor with funding support from the government of Norway, organized a two‑day training workshop to equip community peace committees of Puzene and kupulima to effectively act as community based peace building infrastructure in the Sissala West District.

The Upper West Regional Executive secretary of the Ghana Peace Council , Mr. Clifford Tampuori who was one of facilitators in his presentation delivered on topics like early warning indicators for conflict prevention, chieftaincy disputes, land‑boundary conflicts, and farmer‑herder tensions.

The 2 days workshop engaged over 18 selected Community Peace Council (CPC) members from the Puzene and Kupulma communities to grasp Strengthening Community Resilience and Engagement to Prevent and Respond to Violent Extremism in Ghana.

Another facilitator, Dr. Banungwiiri Moses presented his session on hate speech, derogatory remarks and incitement as acts which lead to violence and urged CPC members to be mindful of their social life presentation. Participants also discussed various topics such as misinformation and disinformation focusing on conflict management, identifying types of conflicts , and resolution strategies.

The two-day workshop took place at the Sissala West District MOFa conference hall between 11th-12th of March, 2026.

The workshop was concluded by dividing Community Peace Council (CPC) members into groups to undertake a practical session, a participant from Kupulma Hon. Batong Katara led Kupulma group to examined a farmer‑herder conflict in which cattle damaged maize and groundnut farms, leading to tension.

Highlighting key issues such as crop destruction and cultural misunderstandings, identifying mediation challenges including tension management and fair compensation.

Hon. Sakulo Ibrahim from Puzene presented on behalf of the Puzene group which focused on a land dispute between two communities and dispute‑resolution mechanisms.

The workshop hopes to equipped CPC members with tools and practical knowledge to manage conflicts, detect early warning signs, and counter hate speech and misinformation, thereby enhancing community resilience and peacebuilding in the Sissala West District.
