NCCE Urges School Children - Embrace Positive National Values

The Sissala West District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Upper West Region, Mr. Mustapha Iddrisu has asked school children to study hard and embrace positive national values in order to fit into the positions of current leaders of the country.

He said this during an engagement with pupils of Nyimati Basic School to mark the 2023 Annual Citizenship Week Celebration of the Commission.

Mustapha Iddrisu indicated that as future leaders, children were expected to serve as agents of change toward reorienting the attitude of Ghanaians in order to consolidate the democratic gains that the country has made since 1992.

This according to him,could only be realized if the current youth studied harder and embraced positive national values such as patriotism, nationalism, accountability, discipline, hard work among others.

The Sissala West District Directorate of the NCCE has been engaging pupils of selected schools across the district in commemoration of the Commission’s 2023 Annual Citizenship Weekunder the theme; “30 years of Consolidating Constitutional Democracy and Building National Cohesion: The Role of the Ghanaian Child”.

The District Director indicated that the theme was carved out of the broader theme of the Commission for the year 2023, which is “30 Years of Consolidating Constitutional Democracy:  Build National Cohesion Through Civic Education and Participation in Local Governance”. The move according to him, was in line with the Commission’s objective of reminding school children on their responsibilities and imbibing positive values in them in order to reshape their attitude in a manner that would enable them serve as agents of change and as well contribute towards building a more vibrant and democratic country.

Volunteer Resource Persons selected from the District Directorate of Ghana Education Service, the Environmental Health Department of the Sissala West District Assembly and staff of NCCE, have therefore been interacting with basic school pupils with a view of inculcating in them, qualities of good citizens, habit of volunteerism and ensuring that in-school youth always adhere to important national values as well as duties of Ghanaian Citizen as contained in Article 41 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

Issues discussed by resource persons during the interactions centred on the need for them to be patriotic and loyal to the state, respect the views and the rights of others, accountable at all times, disciplined,hardworking, ensure high sense of nationalism and as well promote the culture of religious and political tolerance.

Both pupils and teachers of the schools visited, were also entreated to be conscious of their personal security and that of the nation by being vigilant and reporting suspicious persons and movements around school premises and in the communities to security agencies, since communities in the district are being flooded with immigrants from Burkina Faso in recent times, due to recent disturbances in the country.
