The Sissala West District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE)in the Upper West Region, Mr. Mustapha Iddrisu has urged students and all residents of the Sissala West District to participate in Preventing and Containing violent extremism in the country.

He made this statement on 17th May, 2023 during an engagement with students of Dr. Hilla Limann Senior High School in the Sissala West District as part of NCCE, Sensitization of Identifiable Groups on Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism, a programme being implemented by the Commission, with funding from the European Union (EU) with the aimofpreventing the spread of violent extremist activities into the country.

He added thatapart from engaging students, the Commission was engaging many other identifiable groups such as women groups, faith based organizations, youth groups artisansamong others found in communities across the districts.

Mustapha Iddrisunoted that the security of the country was being threatened by local internal issues such as religious, chieftaincy, land and ethnic intra/external party disputes as well as activities of violent extremist groups in neibouring Burkina Faso.

Hence the need for all citizens especially people in border communities to view the security of the nation as a shared responsibility and contribute towards ensuring same by being vigilant in communities and public places and as well offering vital information onsuspicious activities to the security agencies.

On his part, the Regional Information Officer of the Upper West Region Mr Sinto Mustapha Nuhuwho served as the resource person, advised the students against joining radical groups that had negative effects on their lives and be careful when using the internet especially socialmedia platforms since the internet space serves asfetial grounds for recruitment and radicalization of the youth by violent extremist groups in recent times.

He also advised the students to focus on their education in order to build a better future and resist any temptation of being influenced by radicals into causing trouble in school and at their various communities.
