
Peace Council workshop in Sissala West District
The National Peace Council in collaboration with UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) and UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) edified over forty (40) youth groups massed from three zones Zini, Jeffisi and Fielmuo on Human Rights Violations and Negative Gender Norms Stereotypes and Farmer-Herder Conflicts among Traditional council, the clergy and local government actors in the Sissala West District of the Upper West Region.
The two-day training focused on enhancing social cohesion and social contract by empowering women and youth in the three northern regions of Ghana. The Upper West Regional Peace Council implemented it, it took place at the Sissala West District Assembly’s conference hall on 2nd and 3rd September 2024.
The training facilitator, Dr. Patrick Osei Kuffour, a Peace and Security lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) accentuated the basic human rights every Ghanaian enjoy as the Right to vote and be voted for, the right to own property, the right to education, right to shelter and right to life and equality before the law and the values essential for peaceful cohabitation are accountability, equality and fairness, equity, hard work and collective responsibility.
“Universal respect for, and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction of race, sex, language or religion.
The lecturer, Dr Patrick unravels some human rights violations that could cause mayhem when not checked: “when state actors or non-state actors abuse, deny or ignore basic human rights and other freedoms.”
Same venue on a separate day with same target group, similar seminar was organized on the 11th and 12th September, 2024 respectively.
