There is urgent security attention in the Sissala West and East districts in the Upper West Region regarding the recent highway robberies.

The trend is targeted mostly on Fridays between the hours of 8:00 pm to 11 pm.

A recent encounter was on Friday 17th January 2025, one Mr Kanyan Musia Fatawu a young man from Gwollu Konnala electoral area motorbike with registration number M-24-UW 2501 Was snatched at gunpoint by 3 unknown gunmen believed to be armed robbers all wielding guns.

The incident occurred between Gwollu and Liplime, on a rock curve near the police barrier between 11:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. According to the victim, he was returning from Jawia, after 11 pm just before approaching the police barrier he was stopped by unknown men numbering three, all speaking Sissali language thumped him, tied his hands and legs together and bolted with the bike.

There was a similar incident on the 3rd of January, 2025, when Mr Issifu Yomu from Jitong in the Sissala West District TVS star motorbike red in colour without registration number was seized.

A similar episode was recorded on 27th December 2024 where Mr Manaf, A.K.A “Do Good” and several others were attacked by suspected fully armed men and made away with GH¢52,000.00 from Mr Manaf and the rest of the people’s phones, undisclosed amounts and other belongings. A hunter, a victim, Mr Sumaila Basin’s hunting gun was robbed in the scene. Mr Manaf’s car sustained gun shots.

Victim’s narration

“I was from Jawia and passed over my brother’s drug store. Mr Lukman at Liplime, asked we go home together but he replied he was watching a movie and so I proceeded, approaching the police barrier, the cracked rocks, the slow point area is where I got to and they started shouting stop stop, numbering three, all speaking Sissali with guns, three persons approached me and two started beating me and pulled me behind the rocks in the bush and the third person sparked the motor and rode through a small farm path – Liplime farm lands behind the rock towards Kunkorgu and went deep until I couldn’t hear the sound of the motor again and the two others, while I am lying on the ground, they beat me and told me if I try to get up they will shoot me, they also instructed me to unlock my phone and I obliged and they took the phone too, the two guys also escaped and I was left alone struggling, two small boys came and I shouted arm robbers arm robbers and try stopping them unfortunately they passed by, later my brother the drug store owner and another person came and rescued me, we were there when the police FPU patrol team car on patrol also arrived and escorted all of us”. A week ago, another incident was recorded between Sorbelle and Silbelle.

Similar highway robberies along the Jeffisi – Bullu stretch were recorded last year between November and December 2024.

Residence both Sissala West District and East Municipals in the Upper West Region are yelling for swift attention by the security agencies to save guard their lives as they live in fear and panic.

The Sissala West District police command has since commenced investigation into the recent case and the victim’s statement is taken to assist the investigation process.
